We’ve just moved all of FanGathering over to a shiny new VPS server (big upgrade from our old web hosting!).
The nice thing about this is that the site should load a little snappier now (especially on the gallery and forum). But we need your help.
We’d really appreciate it if you could reply here to this post if you spot any errors at all over the next few days. I’ve tested things out pretty thoroughly, but I’ve probably missed a few things out anyway! If the site gives you errors at any point, please let me know (just leave a comment here) so we can get them sorted! 🙂
There’s been one other change;
What Happened to the FanListing?
The FanListing had 768 members from 66 countries. That’s a heck of a lot of Artemis Fowl fans (the biggest collective listing of them on the internet!)
It was nice while it lasted, but I’m afraid the script hasn’t been updated since 2004 now. The site that originally produced it has long since taken it offline because it’s a security risk, and given that fan listings like our one have gone out of fashion online now, I can’t see any viable replacement for it popping up.With all that in mind, the FanListing has been taken down, sorry.
If you’re an Artemis Fowl fan and want something to sign up to though, our forums are much more fun anyway! 😉
What Happened to my Forum Posts?
If you posted a message on the forum during the transfer, sorry, it may have been lost. We put a notice on the forum main page about this, but you mightn’t have seen it on time.
We know it sucks, but it really was unavoidable. If you want to know the reason, read on!
To move the site, we recreated the whole site in the new server first. The very last thing we did was to copy over the forum database again so it was as up to date as possible. At that point we changed FanGathering.com to point to the new server. Unfortunately it takes time (Up to 48 hours) for that change to work its way across the globe, so depending on where you are in the world, you could have been on the new forum in an hour, or waiting a full day… 🙁
We disabled the FanFiction gallery completely during this time, just to make sure that no-one could write new chapters to their stories and end up losing all that. Sorry for any confusion that might have caused!
Hopefully that’s the end of the chaos though, thanks for bearing with us!
Hey Michael,
Nice viewer counter, shame that’s rather new 😀 (or there’d be more) Is the web adress itself going to be shifted for any of the sites though? I’m a bit interested with that because I’d need to reset my homepage if that’s the situation.
Hey darvit,
Thanks for spotting those! Better go see what’s up with them 😀 (I can’t even remember how they were done in the first place anymore! xD )
Alanna,
Hmmm….. it’s not a visitor counter as such. That’s a count of the number of people who are subscribed to get the email updates. You make a good point though, it might look like a visitor counter, which makes the site look a lot less popular than it is. Might take it away again to stop that confusion 🙁
😀 Hey, just label it MiM. Though, if you did find a visitor counter script that would be awesome.
@Michael: It must be a path issue. We had this problem earlier. I can resend you the files, if you want. Just let me know. 😀
For the past two or three days I’ve been trying to edit my stories on the fanfiction link. However, while it lets me read other’s stories and leave comments it will not let me edit my or write new stories. Please help!!!
“We disabled the FanFiction gallery completely during this time, just to

@Darvit – All sorted now! Was an issue with swapping from PHP4 to PHP5. Those sigs rock, Im glad theyre working again 😀
@Alanna – Nice idea about labeling it, I’ve done that now! 🙂
@Bookwormchick – We’ve been moving over like Alanna said, but to be honest, you should be able to log in if the rest of the section has been loading for you. Could you email me your login name from whatever email address you signed up with, to michael@problogdesign.com please? I’ll get you sorted there! 🙂
Okay I know you covered alot but,What exactly is going to be changing? Is the layout going to be different? Is the style of the forum changing? Just wondering so I can watch out for changes.
Cookieninja,
At the minute, nothing really will be changing! It’s a change in the background just, things will be upgraded and faster, but that’s about all. The design and features won’t be changed! 🙂 (Well, except for the late fan listing… xD )
Update, I’ve fixed up the fanfiction section to be working as normal again!
Sorry about that, didn’t find out about that error until today. Thanks to everyone who let me know! 🙂
Heya, there’s a prob with attachments not uploading on the forum. Mia pointed it out, and its not caused by the type of file. Could not upload attachment to ./files/5666_3cf80da6c5753ebb7e9a3bfd43ec8be9.It seems to be a route problem, must have occured during the shift.
Oh yeah, and the coment’s arn’t formating right. There was supposed to be red text for the error type on that.
Well spotted Alanna, the attachments are working again now! 🙂
The color editor on comments worked for me there, not sure what went wrong on you the first time! 🙁
Test one two, is this working?Ok, did that work now?
Nup, all the formating seems to vanish the moment I hit send. It didn’t even paragraph 🙁
(sorry about using three coments, but there’s one last thing I have a bone to pick with)OK, this time I want to sugest that with the FanFicion, when you view comments from the Dashboard the IP adresses should be blocked due to security purposes. I’m a bit worried that a hacker might generate a reason to get coments, and use the IP adresses to hack. Or outright get into an account. Its becoming more like a real threat as FG slowly begins to show signs of overtaking AFC. Sorry if it’s a impractical idea, but its a security risk also.
What web browser do you use Alanna? That could have something to do with it.
The IP addresses in the FanFiction gallery only show up to mods. That’s so that they can blacklist people from coming back again and again. Normal users can’t see them.
That said, knowing an IP is basically harmless. Just about every website on the internet records your IP when you visit the site. Basically the only thing they can normally work out is what country you’re in, which isn’t massively helpful! 🙂
Check out this article for more info: http://ask-leo.com/what_can_people_tell_from_my_ip_address.html
Thanks MiM, they’re still apearing on my stories dating back before the change. I can’t track so there’s no probs there.Browser, Morzilla Firefox. I ditched IE a bit back, not stable at all. So you’re saying it might be that the code is not being sent by the browser, reconised by the system or Firefox dosn’t reconise it?
