Artemis Fowl was not your average teenage boy. He was not even an average genius. But recently he had begun to change. On the morning of his 15th birthday Artemis was feeling particularly joyful. He was finally 15. He had a girlfriend who was smart and beautiful; he had five friends (3 of which were fairy); his family was alive and well. He had all a boy his age could want. Even money.

As Artemis awoke that morning he wondered what surprises were awaiting him. He looked at the clock: 8: 00 am. Time to get up. He chose a navy blue suit from the closet and headed downstairs.

When he entered the kitchen he found his mother sitting at the table sipping coffee.

“Good morning, Mother.”

“Good morning, Arty. Happy Birthday.”

“Thank you.” Then the ring on Artemis’s vibrated gently. He turned to quietly leave the room and headed back upstairs.

He twisted the so that the rather ostentatious red jewel sat on his palm. He curled in his fingers, extended his pinkie and thumb, and raised his hand to his ear.

“Hello?”

“Hey, Mud Boy. Are you in your room?”

“Yes, Holly”

“Look out your window.”

Artemis walked to his window and pulled open the curtains. There, on the balcony, were Foaly, Holly, and Mulch. They all had beaming smiles on their faces.

Happy Birthday to you,

Happy Birthday to you,

Happy Birthday dear Arty,

Happy Birthday to you!”

Artemis laughed. His friends had remembered his birthday.

“Hey Artemis your girlfriend should be showing up in a couple of hours.” said Foaly. “Don’t tell her we told you though; it’s supposed to be a surprise.”

* 2 hours later *

The doorbell rang.

As Artemis answered the door he got that funny feeling in his stomach that he always got when Minerva came over. He opened the door.

“Surprise! Arty, it’s so good to see you!” Minerva exclaimed, attacking Artemis in a hug.

“It’s so good to see you, too,” he said, returning the hug. “Do you have any bags with you?”

“Oh, yes.”

“Let me help you with them.” He stepped out the door to grab her bags. “How long are staying for, Minnie?”

“Just a couple of days. Oh, Happy Birthday.”

“Thank you.”

They were halfway up the stairs now.

“I think we should go out tonight, Artemis. Do you have any other plans?”

“Not that I’m aware of.”

“Then it’s a date!” She turned to go into her room, taking her bags with her.

“Yes,” said Artemis solemnly. “It’s a date.”

* 9 hours later *

Artemis stood at the door waiting for Minerva to come down the steps.

She came down the stairs looking ever so elegant.

“Close your mouth, Artemis. You wouldn’t want to do get drool on your shoes, would you?”

“Minerva you look beautiful!”

She was dressed in a dark blue cocktail dress and black pumps. Her hair was pulled back in a low bun.

She wasn’t wearing her glasses.

“Are we ready to go?” she asked ever so innocently.

“Um, yes.” He extended his elbow. “Shall we depart?”

“Indeed we shall.”

They walked out the door and were immediately escorted, by Butler, to one of the finest restaurants in Dublin.

“I think we shall want a seat out back, don’t you Artemis?”

“I believe so. Waiter, would you be so kind as to place us in one of your tables out back?”

“Right this way, sir.”

He led them to a table. It had SEVEN seats.

“Are we expecting other guests, Minerva?”

“Actually, we are.”

At that moment Holly, Trouble Kelp, Foaly, Caballine, and Mulch appeared in the empty seats.

“Why, hello my friends,” said Artemis, taken aback by their sudden appearances.

“Hello, Artemis, Happy Birthday!!”

“Thank you, my friends, but why are you all here?”

“We thought it would be a fun way to celebrate your birthday,” said Holly.

“Yes, indeed. But what is Trouble doing here?”

“Well, Holly and I are sort of dating. Surprising huh?

“Well, yes actually. Very surprising.”

“Can we please cut the relationship chatter? I’m getting very hungry, here,” chimed in Mulch.

“It’s good to see you too, Mulch.”

And so they ordered meals, ate, talked and had a good time. Towards the end of the evening, Artemis became curious as to how they had come here.

“Well it was all Minerva’s idea,” said Foaly. “This girl really is a sharp piece of work, Artemis. Everybody was in on it, including your parents and Butler. Well your parents didn’t know about us,” he pointed the fairies gathered there, “but that’s a given. Anyway your parents knew that Minerva was coming over to stay the weekend of your birthday. Butler’s job was to get you two here. Holly mesmerized the waiter and a few of the patrons. And then those of us who had dates decided this would be a good chance to take out the ladies.” He finished winking at Trouble. “So that’s basically how it went down.”

“Fascinating. I should have thought of it myself.”

“Don’t be too hard on yourself, Arty. It’s your birthday, have fun.”

I am having fun, he thought. I really am.
