A/N: My Valentine’s Day fic. It’s in a narrator – POV – narrator format that people will kill in order to not read it. Some people will be annoyed. Some people will come after me with pitchforks. It’s just a matter of which of them gets me first.

Oh, and this song is Beautiful Soul by Jesse McCartney.

One more thing: I did this in thirty minutes, and it’s un-beta’d. So don’t kill me.

———

Sooner or later, he gets tired of seeing their faces. They flash before his eyes, their sequined dresses sparkling, their eyes bright, and their laughter hurting his ears.

He wanted them to go away.

———-

I don’t want another pretty face

I don’t want just anyone to hold

I don’t want my love to go to waste

I want you and your beautiful soul

You’re the one I wanna chase

You’re the one I wanna hold

I won’t let another minute go to waste

I want you and your beautiful soul

———-

They made sure they were made-up just so, the powders and perfumes enhancing their best points, all while knowing that he would never take more than a perfunctory interest in any of them. They had all tried flirting – subtly, outrageously – with the icy young man, but he never flirted back.

Were they not attractive enough? All their gowns, money spent – wasted.

Just another pretty face, he would think, looking away from the whole sea of them. They were just faces. They mattered not to him.

  – Wasted

  His time –

  – Wasted

  His love –

  – Wasted

He wanted – needed – something more. Not enough, he thought restlessly. They are not enough for me

                                             ———-

I know that you are something special

To you I’d be always faithful

I want to be what you always needed

Then I hope you’ll see the heart in me

———-

She was breath-taking, in a simple – sharp and pointed, he grinned – way. He liked her exactly the way she was. Unique. No one could match her.

Her wit – it astonishes me – her smiles – how she – her touch – has bound me to her.

They inflamed him, drove him to seek her out again and again, addicted to her scent, her eyes, her hair – I love her.

Love me too, he wanted to say. Love me. Look at me, look in my heart. I love you. I will give you everything. Even that which I have not. Love me back.

He turned his blue eyes away from the other girls. They held no interest for him. Accomplished dancers – so graceful – twirling in the – but her grace – lights – is different – hoping to – from any other’s – catch his eye.

  How he loved her.

———-

I don’t want another pretty face

I don’t want just anyone to hold

I don’t want my love to go to waste

I want you and your beautiful soul

You’re the one I wanna chase

You’re the one I wanna hold

I won’t let another minute go to waste

I want you and your beautiful soul

———-

She was his only light. The only one in the darkness. When he fell she was there. When he cried she was there. Comparable to an angel, she was. So confident, sleek and self-assured.

He wanted her. Her with all her strength and all her weaknesses. He wanted her when she cried, when she hurt, when she was vulnerable. He wanted her and all her flaws.

Not one more second. He swallowed hard, eyes wandering over the many girls in the ballroom, passing over them all, dismissing them all. Patience.

The icy orbs burned – with love – passionately – I will – in the moonlight – win her over – searching for what they could not find. Patience.

He frowned, fingering the large, ornate ring on his finger. Patience

                                     ———-

                               Your beautiful soul, yeah

You might need time to think it over

But I’m just fine moving forward

I’ll ease your mind

If you give me the chance

I will never make you cry, c`mon lets try

———-

Could she – would she – love him – accept him – like how he – or – loved her – reject him and – was that even – crush him – possible?

She was a being of another world, a fairy, come down to earth – how could sinners like him touch her?

“Holly,” he whispers, taking a strand of her auburn hair – so silky and smooth – “I love you,” he says.

She twists away, looks at him, stumbles over her words. Should she say … yes? … no? … love you too? How should she respond to it, this statement, this statement without any doubt?

She twists away, looks at him, stumbles over her words. What does his eyes say? What do they say?

  He loves her.

  “Holly,” he whispers.

———-

I don’t want another pretty face

I don’t want just anyone to hold

I don’t want my love to go to waste

I want you and your beautiful soul

You’re the one I wanna chase

You’re the one I wanna hold

I won’t let another minute go to waste

I want you and your beautiful soul

———-

He sighs, he fidgets. He turns away from the questioning gazes of the young girls.

What’s he doing? There on the balcony?

Doesn’t think we’re pretty or qualified enough for him? We all tried so hard!

What’s so hard about paying attention to us? We shine, don’t we? We glitter more than any jewel.

He sighs, he fidgets. He wishes time would move faster. Patience. He frowns. Patience.

———-

Am I crazy for wanting you?

Baby do you think you could want me too?

I don’t wanna waste your time

Do you see things the way I do?

I just wanna know if you feel it too

There is nothing left to hide

———-

Holly turns the words over and over in her mind, trying to make them sound right.

  Sorry, I don’t love you.

They sound so wrong, so horribly, hatefully wrong. She knows she loves him. Yet she has to break him like this, lying – he lies too – about everything – except this time he didn’t. She feels so guilty, so very dirty. Lies.

  What should she do?

———-

I don’t want another pretty face

She came.

I don’t want just anyone to hold

I clench my hands.

I don’t want my love to go to waste

I know I have misused my time.

I want you and your beautiful soul

Holly will never, ever.

You’re the one I wanna chase

She won’t.

You’re the one I wanna hold

My breath hitches.

I won’t let another minute go to waste

She opens her mouth.

I want you and your beautiful soul

Incredibly, she smiles.

You beautiful soul, yeah.

———-

You’re the only Beauty for this Beast.

  1. Well done helen!
It’s great!!! even tjo I absoloutely hate Jesse McCartney I actually enjoyed this immensely!!!!

  2. Wow. This is really good. A songfic, too. Just like Battery’s… but from two very different angles. Five stars.

  3. I give you, my friend, a standing ovation. That was amazing. A somewhat cliche idea, and it scared me at first, but that was freakin amazing. I love the formatting, that was so original, and it worked perfectly. I don’t even care about any spelling/grammar mistakes at this point; I was too lost in that to notice any. That was absolutely brilliant. Well done.

  4. Thank you! *Squeals*
    The format is messed up…again.

Oh, an wow. There’s so many valentine’s day fics this year.

  5. *sniffs*That was absolutely beautiful!

  6. Thank you! I was kinda worried people wouldn’t get it but…oh well. *Shrugs*

  7. Incredibly fluffy, but not altogether cute.

I must say, the point you tried to make with this song was made, however much I despise it. I think the characterization was fine, but I’m a but confused about the location. Did Holly show up to some ritzy mixer, or did she show up afterwards?

  8. Um… The location doesn’t actually matter, in this story, but if you must know, it’s in Fowl Manor or some other equally opulent place, and there’s currently a ball there, with all those ditzy ladies trying ta catch Arty’s eye.

    Holly showed up later.

The thing here is that the italics all represent different things. Like, sometimes they’re Arty’s thoughts, sometimes random flashbacks.

I get it if you hate those kind of stuff, though. Many people don’t like it cuz it’d really hard to understand (and read) and anyway it’s my first time trying to make it so confusing.

  9. You were making it confusing on purpose?
Well you achieved your goal but it was still awesome!

  10. I didn’t get confused, I thought the way you did it was brilliant. Honestly, I even got the setting. Very subtle piece, but very, very good.

Sorryz, I have a tendency to defend the fics I really like…

  11. *has a tendency to defend opinion* No, no, I got the all-together meaning, just not whether or not Artemis is seriously ditching every girl (and, in theory, her important father) for Holly at a party; because that’s bad business sense, however romantic. And I didn’t insinuate the fic was bad, I just really, really hate Jessie McArtney (sp?). No offense, I just dislike most pop music . . . You’re fic rocked.

  12. Same here, I cant stand Jessie but Helens fic just rocked. I got all of it apart from the setting…I think Arty was awesome in it.

  13. Thanks again, everyone… But personally I don’t think the song or the singer is important, I’m just using the lyrics here.

that was amazing! …yup, that pretty much sums it up. I love fanfics like this!!

  15. That was… fluffy. Not in a bad way, though. Really nice, the way you made the lyrics, but I don’t like Jessie McCartney either.
