Last night, I was listening to my dad’s iPod (mine was in the car, and I didn’t want to go get it), when I listened to “I am a Rock” by Simon and Garfunkel. It reminded me of Artemis in the first book. Enjoy!
Disclaimer: I do not own Artemis Fowl, or this song.
A winters day
In a deep and dark December;
I am alone,
Gazing from my window to the streets below
On a freshly fallen silent shroud of snow.
I am a rock,
I am an island.
I’ve built walls,
A fortress deep and mighty,
That none may penetrate.
I have no need of friendship; friendship causes pain.
Its laughter and its loving I disdain.
I am a rock,
I am an island.Artemis had no friends; he liked it that way. He had Butler, of course, but he wasn’t supposed to be emotionally attached to his bodyguard. His “shell of icy composure” warned people to stay away from him; to not dare to befriend him.
Artemis had no friends; he liked it that way. He had Butler, of course, but he wasn’t supposed to be emotionally attached to his bodyguard. His “shell of icy composure” warned people to stay away from him; to not dare to befriend him. Don’t talk of love,
But I’ve heard the words before;
Its sleeping in my memory.
I won’t disturb the slumber of feelings that have died.
If I never loved I never would have cried.
I am a rock,
I am an island.He loved no one, not now. He used to love his parents, but after his father disappeared, his mother was turned insane by sadness. He wanted his father back, of course, but Artemis doubted that he truly loved his father.

And my poetry to protect me;
I am shielded in my armor,
Hiding in my room, safe within my womb.
I touch no one and no one touches me.
I am a rock,
I am an island.
He was surrounded by knowledge, he disdained anybody that did not know the world as he did; he disdained those who loved and laughed. The only one he even remotely respected was Butler; Butler was the only one who was near enough to him to touch him, emotionally. And a rock feels no pain;
And an island never cries
Artemis lacked emotion, he showed nothing on his face, and he lacked emotion on the inside too; he felt some emotion, but not much. And he never cried.
But then he met Holly….
