To Forgive and Forget

Loading ...The phone rang.
“Yes?”
“Artemis, it’s Minerva.”
Why did she call him? Didn’t, she know? After ignoring her for years, didn’t she know that he didn’t want her? Didn’t want her then, not now, not ever. Did she not know that his heart was still with Holly?
“Artemis, I’m worried about you.”
Why should she worry? She had admirers, she was rich, and he family was there with her. Her life was good. Why worry about him? He didn’t mean anything to her.
“Artemis? Say something.”
He forced his lips to move. “What?”
“Thank god. I thought that you’d gone.”
Silence.
“Artemis, I didn’t call for nothing. I called to ask you…” her voice trailed off awkwardly. She didn’t know how to phrase the question in a way that didn’t seem intrusive, but then she didn’t need to. Artemis knew.
“How I felt? I don’t know. I felt nothing.”
He was lying and she knew it.
“You did feel something, Artemis. I know. I saw it.”
“Go away.”
“Artemis? Artemis, don’t.”
“Don’t what?” His voice was pure acid. Cutting and painful.
“Don’t do this to me, Artemis.” He was silent. He had expected anything but this.
“Artemis, do you think that I still hope for you and I to be together? I know how you feel about me, Artemis, and I know that you don’t like me, not that way. I only called you to comfort you as a friend.”
A friend?
He hadn’t had a friend for so long, he’d forgotten what it was like.
“You remember when I turned away at the funeral? When you asked me…” He paused and continued. “What changed me?
“Yes?”
He took a deep breath. “You remember Holly? I loved her, I really did, but she didn’t love me as much. She had her duties.” It all came out so easily. “I didn’t feel anything after that, and even if I did, I didn’t want to and after a while it all went away.”
‘Artemis…”
“I don’t know what to do! I lost everything! Holly! My family! My family, I watched them die! I could have done something! Saved them! Artemis was almost sobbing. “I’m such a failure.” The last sentence was a whisper, and Minerva felt tears roll down her cheeks at this display of emotions.
Oh, Artemis, she thought. What have you done to yourself?
“Artemis, hold on. I’m coming over.”
“Alright.”

Minerva should be hit by a bus and why did everyone die? How old is Arty supost to be is he’s asking Holly to marry him and his little brothers are climbing mountains and dieing in cars!
