Chapter Two: Surprises

Holly woke up with a pale boy sitting in the room. HeĀ  was looking out the window. When he realized she had woken up, he looked at her.

Those eyes were familiar. Whose were they? Then it struck Holly.

Artemis Fowl, she thought quietly. She sat up.

“What are you doing here?” she asked.

“No, I think the question is what are you doing here?” Artemis asked. He always liked to play his little ‘mind-games’, even with allies.

“I asked first. Anwser me!” Holly said.

“All right, all right.” Artemis’s face was going a tad red. “Erm…” Erm? Artemis couldn’t believe he had said erm. It wasn’t even a word. “Well… I kind of…”

Holly’s turn to go red. “Like me?” she finished.

“Yeah,” Artemis said quietly, going red.

Holly’s turn, once again, to go redder. “Same thing here. Kind of… obvious much?”

Artemis was quiet. Holly urged herself to be quiet, also: She knew that look. The famous Artemis Fowl the II was thinking.

Be quiet, Holly, Holly thought to herself. Artemis is thinking. He’s trying to figure out a way where we can be together. I just know it. Please, be quiet. Don’t allow yourself to speak–

Artemis began talking again.

“But I do think that Opal Koboi–did I say it right?–is kind of cute.”

Holly’s mouth dropped open. She crossed her arms and looked away.

How can I ever trust Artemis again? she thought sternly to herself. I think I’d be better off with Chix or Grub or Trouble. At least they’re fairies and they know how I feel most of the time.

“But not in the way you think, Holly,” Artemis whispered. Holly could feel his peircing gaze on her back.

“I love you, Holly. Don’t mistake me on it. Koboi’s just cute. She has the mind of a criminal. Even if I’m a criminal too, I’m quitting being a criminal. That way if Koboi likes me, she’ll realize I’m more like you, Holly, than like her.

Holly’s mind veered to a song. She thought it matched the situation perfectly. It began playing itself like a record player in her mind.

Remember the feelings,

Remember the day.

My stone heart was breaking

My love ran away.

This moment I knew I would be someone else

My love turned around and I felt…

Holly’s train of thought fell away as she fell asleep, tiredness sweeping over her, darkness enveloping her, romantic dreams circling around her, trapping her. How could she ever pull away?
