Oh I had a lot to say
Was thinking on my time away

Artemis walked around Fowl Manner’s grounds, something he did not do very often. Physical exercise did not suit the Irish Boy. But Artemis had been spending more and more time outside ever since he had seen the way Holly saw nature. She adored it, seeing trees like masterpieces. In fact, Holly was all Artemis thought about these days. She was his world.

I miss you and things weren’t the same
‘Cause everything inside it never comes out right

It had been years since Artemis had seen Holly. They had been best friends, but hadn’t shared a word in two long years. Artemis had tried to tell Holly how special he thought she was on many occasions, but it always ended up being criticism. He wondered how Holly could stand him.

And when I see you cry it makes me wanna die.

Artemis thought about the only time he had ever seen Holly cry; when she was mourning Commander Root. It had torn him up inside.

I’m sorry i’m bad, i’m sorry i’m blue
I’m sorry about all the things I said to you
And I know I can’t take it back

The young genius walked the grounds twice, deep in his memories. How many times had he mocked Holly for her intelligence? She wasn’t stupid, she just wasn’t a genius. Of course, Holly had said a lot of mean things to him, but he still felt guilty. And Artemis couldn’t even say he was sorry, because the fairy communicator had broken last year.

I love how you kiss, I love all your sounds
And baby the way you make my world go ’round
And I just wanted to say i’m sorry.

Artemis touched the cheek Holly had kissed. It had been a sign of friendship, but had made Artemis’s mind swim for days anyway.

This time I think i’m to blame
It’s harder to get through the days
We get older and blame turns to shame

Artemis had accepted that he loved Holly many years ago, but never admitted it fully, not even to himself. They fought too much, and Artemis would age much faster than Holly. She’d outlive him by a thousand years. It just couldn’t work.

‘Cause everything inside it never comes out right
And when I see you cry it makes me wanna die.

There had been so many opportunities to tell Holly he loved her. He had wasted every one. And now Holly thought he was dating Minerva. Well, she was wrong. Minerva was a nice friend, but nothing more. He wished he could tell Holly that.

I’m sorry i’m bad, i’m sorry i’m blue
I’m sorry about all the things I said to you

And I know I can’t take it back

Artemis walked back inside Fowl Manner, down into Holly’s old cell. Years and years ago, Holly had sat in this room, trapped as his prisoner. Artemis hadn’t cared then; he hadn’t really thought of her as a person. When he had looked at the fairy, all he had seen was gold.

Every single day I think about how we came all this way
The sleepless nights and the tears you cried
It’s never too late to make it right
Oh yeah Sorry!

Artemis thought about the time Holly had helped saved his father. The first time Artemis had really considered Holly a person was when her finger had been cut off. Seeing the elf lie motionless on the floor, pale and unconscious, seemed to jerk Artemis into reality. There was a living creature dying on the train floor, and it had been partially his fault. Since then, Artemis had respected Holly as an equal, even if he didn’t show it.

I’m sorry i’m bad, i’m sorry i’m blue
I’m sorry about all the things I said to you
And I know I can’t take it back
I love how you kiss, I love all your sounds
And baby the way you make my world go ’round
And I just wanted to say i’m sorry.
I’m sorry baby.
I’m sorry baby.
I’m sorry.

Artemis sighed, and walked outside again, sitting on a stone bench. If he had only been a bit quicker, Holly could have been sitting next to him. Suddenly, Artemis felt a slender hand on his shoulder. He spun around to find a humanized Holly, rounded ears and all, staring down at him, smiling. Her mismatched eyes said it all. She loved him back, loved him enough to change species. “I’m sorry,” Artemis whispered. Holly nodded, took his hand, and walked across the yard. There would be time for apologies later.
