Loading ...The north wind started raising goosebumps on Artemis’s back. Where was he? The last thing he remembered was passing out…and a blur.
Artemis’s brain registered that several things were happening at once. Firstly, he was being dangled by his suit collar. Second, Rin was carrying himself and the suit collar by her fangs. Thirdly, after squinting for a few seconds, silent tears were streaming down Rin’s cheeks. After a few mental calcuations, he finally grasped what was going on.
“Where are you taking me? How could you do this?”
Rin did not reply, not unless giving him a sharp glare and a hiss counted. Artemis didn’t even flinch in the slightest. He only glared back, with slightly more menace in his eyes. Rin winced. Artemis was even more unerving than a real vampire. Not that a half-formed one counted. Rin’s tears grew even more pronounced.
“I’d never thought I’d ever do this…”
“Neither did the rest of us. Rin, turn back. It’s not too late for redeemption”
“Oh yes it is…I knew the whole thing was selfish…but I really liked you…from the day that I saw you at the cafe. After the encounter…and the events that followed, I couldn’t help but feel attracted to you…” Rin brushed off another flurry of tears as she continued. “I didn’t want you back in the human realm”
“So where are we headed? Are you going back to Fantasia to stick me in a coffin or something?” Artemis muttered sarcastically.
“I don’t know…”

Butler was the only calm one in this situation, while everyone else was fretting.
“Why? Why?” Holly moaned. “How could she do this to us? She decieved us all!”
“Shut up.” Adularia muttered. “You don’t know anything about her. She’s sweet and caring. It’s just that…that…”
“That what?” Minerva snapped. Adularia glared.
“…we were orphaned three hundred years ago by a tremendous fire. Rin’s emotionally unstable. She’s been alone for all this time and she never had any hold on her life, not even with me. My theory is that she probably saw something in that Fowl boy…saw the light and the love that he was enveloped with and was attracted…that he probably used to share the same loneliness and pain”
No one could voice any reply to this. Adularia stashed the remaining antidote in his bag, looking forward to completing it later.
“Rin’s not really a terrible person…it’s just when personal desires get in the way…” he sighed. “Never mind. Let’s go after him before sis does something stupid again”

Four figures loomed from the darkness.
“Aw, shoot” Rin muttered darkly.
“Sis!” Adularia called. “Please turn back!”
Guilt had tugged at Rin, yet she ignored it. Of all these centuries of solitary confinement, she was going to give in so soon?
Everyone except Butler and Adularia had a pair of wings strapped on, but Rin still showed no signs of fatigue after three hours of pursuit. Suddenly, chains flew out of the darkness and wound themselves around Rin and her pursuers. Everyone fell to the earth with a thump.
“We’ve found them!” A voice shouted.
“Excellent, Derh” A shadow that the group instantly identified as the minister strutted towards them. He walked past the group and towards Rin. He seized her by her shirt and turned to the troops that he brought with him.
“I think it’s time we confirmed”
“What in Frond’s name do you think you’re doing?” Holly demanded. The man turned back to her and mused.
“Hmmm… I guess it wouldn’t hurt to tell you; after all, all of you are going to die anyway. Well, you see, it’s about experiment 8HJS9 itself”
“What? You all just wanted to establish a few stool pidgeons on this surface! What has Rin got to do with it? Let her go!” A few violet sparks erupted from Adularia’s eyes, but the vampires remained unperturbed.
“Our goals were never to plant spies among the mud men…that was what we told them to prevent the council from getting suspicious…it was to get to your little sister here”
Adularia spat. “All that for Rin?”
“Indeed. Why, you never knew your own sister’s true powers? I suppose I better start from the beginning…do you know of Vlad the Impaler?”
“You mean the king many coined as Dracula?” Minerva replied, shocked. “So he really was a vampire?”
“Yes. A great and powerful one…he was cursed, a sinner among sinners. Mud man history was unreliable then…he founded Fantasia and had power greater than every undead being in the city combined…”
“But what have I got to do with him? He’s long dead!” Rin demanded.
“Everything.” His eyes flashed her way. “You see, many feared his great power…and back then, our leader had charged the Miermere royal family with keeping the secret power secure…and they sealed it into a child. We desired this power… the experiment 8HJS9 was a test…to see if we could forced his soul out after the body was too weakened to contain him”
No one could speak in these few moments. The minister smiled and went on, as Adularia snarled, enraged.
“Our initial thought was of you, Adularia, for you were the Miermere’s firstborn and a male…a prominant choice. Of course, that’s why soldiers were sent to capture you…we thought you were the chosen one…yet when we finally found that we were wrong, we tried to dispose of you and set our sights on Rin, but we had already ‘killed’ one Miermere, and we could not do so again without causing suspicions”
Rin blanced at the thought of how close to death she had been. Not that she was already dead. More guilt settled on her. So she was the reason Adularia was made to suffer…
“But still…clever. To use Adularia as bait while protecting the real keeper… only Beias Miermere would have thought of that one…”
Rin’s head dropped to her chest. So she was only a guinea pig, used as a storage device to keep Fantasia out of harm’s way…and Adularia…the fire in her chest was fully burning now…after all the loyalty that she had pledged to her own kind…They had let her down again. Her fist tightened as her heartrate beat furiously.
RWAR!!! Rin erupted in a blanket of smoke. Bat wings, mutated beyond belief shot out of her back. Her eyes swelled and were colored crimson. Fierce energy particles spewed out from her body.
Everyone stood momentarily stunned, awed by the true power of Dracula, as Holly, Minerva, and Butler slowly began to retreat. Things were not looking good. One, they were surrounded by lethal vampire enemies. Two, Artemis’s condition did not look any rosier. And three, Rin had snapped, and she didn’t look like she cared whether the people she was about to harm were friend or foe.

Yeah, and after her encounters with mud men, vampires will think of Rin as a traitor (oops… I think I said too much).

You can start rating by the next chapter. That is where things really start getting exciting. You expect the main conflict is Rin going home, but it really isn’t. It’s much worse.

DRAT!!! I forgot Minerva doesn’t appear before the Lost Colony! Oh well! Readers, just pretend that Minerva meets Artemis during that time! Stupid.stupid.stupid.stupid.stupid. Actually, scratch that. I’m just going to pretend this is after the lost colony and everything is settled down with all the mind wipes on Arty’s parents and Holly is still going solo.

Yeah, I forgot the vampire smile. And besides, vampire sight is greatly dilluted by light. I also could not come up with a decent title, and it will seem like a bloody lily later on. I think that covers everything. Oh, and I have bad grammar that I’ll try to correct.

I’m not really good at those “sweet” moments, but I’ll try in the future. Fear not, Arty fans! There IS a cure, it just depends on if Rin is willing to help them (or if she runs out in fear or disgrace).
