Chapter 24: Sirens
“Where did Spin go?” Asked Artemis. Half of the Extendes were at their respective jobs and the rest had been put on babysitting duty, guess who they were babysitting?
“She had an appointment, Hunter, no need to worry about her.” Said Gig trying his best to aim as his target. Gig was playing a video game of Nos’s design. It was an assassin game with an emphasis on sniper training. The idea was to train the player for the real thing. Each level one advanced, new distractions lay in wait.
“What the hell Nos!” Yelled Gig as a mine exploded right next to Gig’s target. Gig’s ‘gun’ was quit realistic, he was on his knees the rifle propped on the coffee table between two legs, Nos had explained to Gig that he modeled it after the 50 caliber rife used by the military. “How I am supposed to hit that now?” Gig gestured wildly at the screen at his now hidden target. The mine had caused the character to duck behind a cement wall. Nos smiled and shrugged.
“If you can’t hit it it’s not my problem.” He went back to working on an odd looking gun. Artemis had noticed that the gun Nos had looked much like a Neutrino 3000 but the handle was larger, it had a larger battery pack, and solar cells were placed all around it giving the weapon a shiny black top and sides.
“Who is she meeting?” Asked Artemis. Blossom, sitting on the couch, froze, as well the rest of the people in the room.
“She went to meet Butler.” Said Gig as if this was a normal conversation about the weather. Artemis made a sharp intake of breath, Butler? Could it be true? “Things are suppose to go wrong about this time in whatever plan you put through, however I doubt, if there is a mistake, it will be a game changer.” Gig shot the target in the head causing him to fall over and blood to gush from its skull. Artemis felt a chill go down his back, how many times had Gig done this with a real weapon?
The familiar neon green message of ‘Incoming Transmission’ began to blink in the center of the screen. Gig raised his head and stood. Wolf’s face was almost unrecognizable, he looked crazily at Gig and then at Artemis.
“We have a problem, Spin’s ordered a level five alert to all complexes, she’s also ordered a level five test on my whole system! I don’t know what’s going on I haven’t been able to get in touch with her. She just hung up after she told me we’ve been breached.” Wolf looked at Artemis. “Get him to a safe location; it’s better to talk about this in private.” Gig looked at Artemis.
“Sorry mate.” Gig looked at Blossom and nodded. Blossom stood up and began to usher him out the sliding glass doors.
“Wait a minute Artemis.” Said Wolf, Artemis turned around and face the young man. Wolf looked at another monitor. “I’ve seen you the files Spin requested I give you.” Wolf paused typing quickly on another keyboard. “The ones concerning us and our past, and all of the evidence to support our story, ring a bell?” Artemis nodded.
“You’re sending that to me now?” Asked Artemis, surprised considering his past urgency to get Artemis out of the room.
“I’ve sent them to Shade’s laptop, it’s the one on the desk, it works just fine. Oh, and just so you know, you have no connection on that machine in there, I’ve told Gig to take out its ability to make a wireless connection or wired connection for that matter.” Artemis looked at Gig who shrugged.
“Still don’t trust me?” Asked Artemis, Gig gave him a cheesy smile.
“What can I say? You haven’t given us an answer yet, so yur technically a hostel entity.” Artemis gave Gig a ruthless look, and then smirked.
“Glad to see you’re still on your guard, Gig.” He smiled at Artemis; Gig looked at Blossom who began moving once again.
“So what is this all about?” Asked Artemis as Blossom and him were nearing his door. Blossom shrugged.
“I don’t know, though I don’t think I’ve ever seen Wolf that frantic before, and Spin’s never called a level five scan of the system before.” Blossom physically pointed to the idea that had come to mind. “Maybe she found something when she met with Butler!” She said frantically. “Cause I bet that’d cause her to worry!” Artemis looked down at the ground for a moment, what had happened between them? So far Spin had done quite a good job with keeping him occupied and isolating him from any information about the Extendes identities and his current location, so how could Butler have rattled her so much to cause such a panic? And was this the kind of panic she wished to inspire? Would not this overreaction, if it was such, trigger dissention amongst the Extendes? Why would she take the risk? She wouldn’t, concluded Artemis; she would know how bad this looked to him so whatever happened was a serious flaw in her plan. However the next question was what was it?
