About a week after the Fowl Seige, Artemis recieved a video in his email from an anonymous sender. He ran a scan to check for viruses, then, finding none, he opened it. His video player popped up on the screen, and it started playing. Who should be standing there, but none other than Captain Holly Short. She began to speak, her face smiling, but her eyes hard as ice.

“Listen, Fowl. I have something to say to you about all this. So I’m going to tell you. In the version of a song. It’s called “Fighter” by Christina Aguilera. I’m sure you’re smarty-pants brain will figure out just why I chose this.”

She took a breath, and began the song with some spoken words.

“After all that you put me through,
You think I’d despise you,
But in the end I wanna thank you,
‘Cause you’ve made me that much stronger.”

She took a deeper breath, and started to sing into the microphone in front of her.

“Well I thought I knew you, thinkin’ that you were true.
Guess I, I couldn’t trust, called your bluff, time is up,
Cause I’ve had enough.
You were there by my side, always down for the ride,
But your joy ride just came down in flames cause your greed sold me out in shame.

After all of the stealing and cheating, you probably think that I hold resentment for you,
But uh uh, oh no, you’re wrong.
Cause if it wasn’t for all that you tried to do, I wouldn’t know
Just how capable I am to pull through,
So I wanna say thank you,
Cause it

Makes me that much stronger,
Makes me work a little bit harder,
It makes me that much wiser,
So thanks for making me a fighter.
Made me learn a little bit faster,
Made my skin a little bit thicker,
Makes me that much smarter,
So thanks for making me a fighter.”

She was now gripping the microphone in one hand, glaring out from the screen, meeting his eyes as if she could really see him.

“Never saw it coming, all of your backstabbing,
Just so you could cash in on a good thing before I’d realize your game.
I heard you’re going round play, the victim now,
But don’t even begin feeling I’m the one to blame,
Cause you dug your own grave.
After all of the fights and the lies cause you’re wanting to harm me,
But that wont work anymore, no more,
It’s over.
Cause if it wasn’t for all of your torture,
I wouldn’t know how to be this way now and never back down,
So I wanna say thank you,
Cause it

Makes me that much stronger,
Makes me work a little bit harder,
It makes me that much wiser,
So thanks for making me a fighter.
Made me learn a little bit faster,
Made my skin a little bit thicker,
Makes me that much smarter,
So thanks for making me a fighter.”

Artemis sat up a little straighter, assuming an expression tipped with haughtiness. He didn’t really mean that look, though. He understood how she felt. Maybe I made a mistake, he thought. No, that’s absurd. I never could have seen it coming when I kidnapped her. He wiped away the expression, and actually started to feel inclined to also thank Holly back for many reasons, but one in particular. She continued on, into the bridge of the song. Even as her voice softened, it held possibly even more sting than it had in the beginning.

“How could this man I thought I knew
Turn out to be unjust, so cruel?
Could only see the good in you,
Pretend not to see the truth.
You tried to hide your lies, disguise yourself
Through living in denial,
But in the end you’ll see,
YOU-WONT-STOP-ME!

I am a fighter and I,
I ain’t gonna stop.
There is no turning back.
I’ve had enough.”

Holly had such a self satisfied smirk, that Artemis couldn’t help feeling like the stupidest person in the world, even if he was actually the smartest.

“Makes me that much stronger,
Makes me work a little bit harder,
It makes me that much wiser,
So thanks for making me a fighter.
Made me learn a little bit faster,
Made my skin a little bit thicker,
Makes me that much smarter,
So thanks for making me a fighter.”

Holly was now actually smiling. Not just smirking, but actually happy. She had both hands wrapped around the microphone as she hit the notes, voice tinged with the most subtle tip of cruelty.

“You thought I would forget,
But I remembered.
Cause I remembered,
I remembered.
You thought I would forget,
I remembered,
Cause I remembered,
I remembered.

Makes me that much stronger,
Makes me work a little bit harder,
It makes me that much wiser,
So thanks for making me a fighter.
Made me learn a little bit faster,
Made my skin a little bit thicker,
Makes me that much smarter,
So thanks for making me a fighter.”

As the song ended, Holly turned sideways slightly, the half smile creeping back onto her face.

“See, Fowl? You tried to do everything just for yourself, and hold me captive, completely helpless. But you know what? You helped me, and my future career. So you were wrong.”

She said this with such contempt, Artemis was a little thrown. He thought she was happy to be doing this, and giving him this message. However, she continued.

“But I really do want to thank you, Artemis. You did make me stronger, renewed my creativity, and just made me a better person, even if you didn’t mean to. Thank you.”

“You’re welcome,” Artemis answered, although he knew she couldn’t hear him.

“We’re not done, though, Fowl. I can feel it. You just remember that.”

The video ended, and the movie player disappeared. Artemis sat in his chair for several minutes after that, staring at the blank screen. Her words echoed in his head. We’re not done, though, Fowl. I can feel it. You just remember that.

We’re not done. He almost liked the sound of that. The Fowl Seige had been an incredible experience, even if it hadn’t ended very well for either side. He sat until his mother called him down for supper.

  1. These don’t suck! I’m serious! You did really good on yours. I loved it. Amazing job! 😀

  2. Arty’s: Nice and sweet. Fairly fitting for the situation. *insert concrit here, ‘cause I can’t write it for a challenge*
Fighter: Haha, I wrote a songfic with Fighter – by Christina Augilera, no less. XD http://artemisfowl.fangathering.com/fanfiction/angst/fighter/ No one reads it anymore, and it’s pretty bad, so whatever, XD. I thought Holly’d feel more like this after the Time Paradox, not the Siege, but it’s an interesting take – having her sing it and all. I liked the ending ^^.
Coral’s: My, interesting. I’ve seen few Coral-centered fics, and this was nice. Cute, meaningful, powerful, and an interesting take on things.
No1: Again, you don’t see a lot of things. Never heard the song, but I can see how it would relate to No1’s experience. Without the lyrics, though, the thing kinda falls flat… and I just never read the lyrics, so… XD
BONUS! XD: Cute, sweet, but you’re right, it doesn’t really suit for a character description. Overall, nice job!
