Hello everyone! Iris here. I’m not very active as an editor, but I thought I’d place some information here above the older announcement (I hope one of the other editors will change this if there is a better way). ย

While spam is no longer posted on the site, there is still a lot of it in the ‘unapproved’ section. This makes it difficult for us editors to notice it when a real person posts a story. While there are some workarounds (stories that have been placed in a categorie are noticed a lot more easily), it can still take a while before a new user is approved or (s)he can be missed completely. I also don’t know how active the other editors are, but I know that I’m rarely here to check for new users. That is why I thought it might be a good idea to leave a message here to new users:

Dear new users, in order to speed up your approval process, please leave a comment on this post with your username.

While it probably still won’t be approved the same day, the chances of an editor noticing you’ve posted a story are a lot greater. Once you are approved, you can post other stories without needing approval. If you are a forum user, sending a pm to ‘Battery” will work too.

~Irisย

Hey there!

It’s been quite a while since I was last here so I figure I should introduce myself first as usual – I’m Kayley, your friendly neighborhood admin!

So it’s come to my attention recently that there have been a lot of advertisement posts on this site lately. So that’s bad and stuff. Luckily you guys spoke up about the problem before it got too bad, and I’ve set up a temporary fix to the problem that I think you guys should know about.

This change does not affect anyone who is already signed up and posting.

Basically, what’s changed is the default settings of new users. Normally, new users were automatically put in the “author” category (that’s you) so that they could make new posts. After tonight, new users will be placed in a different category that allows them to save drafts, but not post things to the site before editor review. This way, we’ll be able to delete the spam without it bothering you all and clogging up the archive, and when a legitimate new user makes a post, we’ll be able to spot it easily and move them to the “author” group. This might be a little inconvenient, but I think it’s definitely better than having twenty-three pages of backlogged spam in the archives!!

Unfortunately bots who are already signed up will still be able to post, but hopefully we’ll be able to catch them before they become too annoying, this way.

If you have any questions about this you can ask in the comments – I think it’s acceptable to discuss the change there in this case – or PM me on the forum.

I think this is a good idea to stop the incoming spam, but, as editors, are you able to lock/freeze/delete the spammers’ accounts? I’m not sure of the extent of an editor’s abilities, but if you can create a program that filters the stories of new users, would you be able to delete an account or change its password?

Oh, hai AA(Angry Apple?) it’s nice to see you around here again. I wasn’t a member when you were an active editor, but I had been reading for a while before and I saw where people called you Angry Apple.

    Back to the topic…

I know all of this spam is a pain to keep up with, and I’m glad you guys are trying to do something about it. I don’t think the present spam bots should be too much trouble after a while. I have noticed there will be several spam stories from one author, then they will never pop up again. Hopefully, they won’t post more.

Thanks so much for trying to help! You should come on here more!

  2. Heehee…I rated this. 5/5 stars!
It’s a good idea, but what about the already registered spammers?! They’re still posting their junk! It’s annoying. When are these people going to realize,
    NOBODY
    SANE
    READS
    SPAM
    SO
    STOP POSTING IT!!
Bad advertising strategy. Couldn’t we try convincing these companies? We know their emails, right? It’s too peaceful for what they’ve done but…gah!
Anyways, thanks for your awesomeness! Thanks for mostly fixing this problem. Thanx!!*hugs AA*

  3. SilverGoddess – Hi! ๐Ÿ™‚ We certainly can ban and delete spam accounts, and that’s what I’ve been doing with the accounts that have posted spam since I cleared out the bulk of it last night. It’s not really possible to do anything like create a filter, because in order to install anything new we would need access to the hosting site information, which only MichaelM has :I It’s a good thought though!

@shaadia: The already registered spammers can’t really be dealt with except to ban their accounts and delete the spam. There’s no way to filter posts without installing a plugin, and again we’re back to needing Michael. I tried a lot of options last night, and this was the only one that didn’t need host login details x_x But I’ve just deleted the spam from between when I went to bed and when I got up, and it only took about two minutes as opposed to the hour it took to wade through all the spam posts last night – so that’s progress at least!

Unfortunately the spambots aren’t exactly that intelligent, because that’s what they are: spambots. They’re not actual people for the most part, they’re just bots that are programmed to spam nice people’s sites with ads. This kind of thing goes on on almost every site like this. As for their emails, they’re generally as unintelligable as their names.

  4. I’m a bit confused. Does that mean that whenever I publish a draft, the draft\fanfic gets sent to the admins to be moderated? If so, great idea! If not….please explain…

  5. Hello ๐Ÿ™‚ That’s not exactly what it means, since you signed up before this change was made. The default group before the change was “author,” which meant all new users then (that’s you) were placed in that group. After the change, all new users were placed in the “contributor” group by default, meaning that people who signed up after the change will have to get their posts approved before they become visible. We can see all the pending posts (posts that contributors have saved) on our control panel. Does that make any more sense? ๐Ÿ™‚

Also, just to give you guys a little security – every spam post for the last two (edit: four!!) hours has been caught by this! Hopefully that means it’ll clear up soon ๐Ÿ™‚

  6. Yeah, it does. Sorry for my idiotic comment, I was never good at paying attention..

  7. um….but spamming is still going on! its these already registered spam freakos…isnt there a way to stop them?

  8. Yes, we know. As we said, there’s not really anything we can do about that except ban them. The volume of spammers that have been posting lately has gone down a lot though, though you might not be able to tell from where you’re standing it’s very obvious on our control panel. The only thing we can do is ban them and wait for them to run out of accounts, but it seems to be working so far (albeit slowly)

yup, but i did notice. earlier, some spam post kept appearing every 2 minutes, but its not bad now. and now i am not afraid to post fics;)

  10. Hey! I used to belong to this site /years/ ago, and just recently came back with a new account. I just posted my first story, and it vanished after a few hours of being in the “pending” status. I re-posted it again today, hoping that it won’t disappear this time. And yes, I did check the trash and pending tabs on the storyboard page. If it happens again, is there anything I can do to fix this problem so it doesn’t happen again?

Hey Fowlifer, I logged into my own account, just I could reply to your post.

If I may ask, what was your old username? I may remember you. I have been reading off of this site for several years, though I only made an account six or seven months ago. I just wanted to know who you are.

Secondly, why can’t you log into your old account? If you forgot your password, you can have a reset code sent to your email that will allow you into your old account. If this does not work, I can attempt to hack your old account so you can use it again, though I may not get through because I don’t know you. Just an idea.

Lastly, (I hope I’m not creeping you out with all these questions, or an offer to hack your old account.) what did you title the new story? The type of title you gave my have made it written off as spam, and the fact your username is two words put together doesn’t help. Many of the spambot usernames are jumbled letters or two random words stuck together. If an editor didn’t look closely enough at it, it could look like that.

Sorry if I sound harsh or anything, it says on my profile that I’m not much of a sugarcoating person. I’m just trying to help you.

  12. Hi Fowlifer! That just means that you’ve been placed in the “Contributor” group and whoever was deleting spam that day must have missed it – we’re incredibly sorry! If you can tell me the username you use to sign in, one of us can move you to the “Author” group and it’ll all be sorted ๐Ÿ™‚

(Also to the editor team – please look through what you’re deleting before you delete it!!)

  13. Hello Fowlifer,
Yesterday I deleted about 1000 posts of spam, so I’m afraid this was my fault. I check all the titles, but I must’ve missed yours. AA already apologized, but again: I’m really sorry!
I also approved the post that was among the pending posts, it’s now a draft, so you can publish it if you wish.

(Sorry AA T.T I’ll try to do better and pay more attention in the future)

  14. Thanks. My login is 1st-generation-fowl

One more problem xD I canโ€™t publish it. The โ€œsubmit for reviewโ€ button is all that shows up. That and the preview.

  15. Well, the button IS there, just not visible. It’s the bottom right corner of the publish box.
PS: do NOT click anywhere else, because once I did and it got trashed!

  16. @Iris: It’s fine! Getting used to running things is always a little bumpy; on my first day of modding the forum I accidentally deleted a bunch of shoutbox messages x)

@Fowlifer: I’ve just moved you to the “author” group, which means the publish button should show up now and you should be able to post normally ๐Ÿ™‚ Sorry for the wait x_x

Also, I somehow forgot to mention that Iris and Bobo are both part of the editor team now! ๐Ÿ™‚

    Congrats Iris and Bobo!

Also, that thingy with the publish button not showing applies to me as well. Perhaps someone can use their magical modding powers and help me so that I may FINALLY publish some stories?

    Thanks,
    ~Solinium

PS: My login is Orion Hood.

  18. I`ve literally not been here for nearly half a year.

Why is this thing still up…? XD

Well, this section of the site is still facing the occasional spam; however, our temporary solution is still in action. So, I do believe AA and the others wish to keep this post up to inform any new or old members, passing by, of the rather long situation.
    ~Amy
