Hello everyone! Iris here. I’m not very active as an editor, but I thought I’d place some information here above the older announcement (I hope one of the other editors will change this if there is a better way).
While spam is no longer posted on the site, there is still a lot of it in the ‘unapproved’ section. This makes it difficult for us editors to notice it when a real person posts a story. While there are some workarounds (stories that have been placed in a categorie are noticed a lot more easily), it can still take a while before a new user is approved or (s)he can be missed completely. I also don’t know how active the other editors are, but I know that I’m rarely here to check for new users. That is why I thought it might be a good idea to leave a message here to new users:
Dear new users, in order to speed up your approval process, please leave a comment on this post with your username.
While it probably still won’t be approved the same day, the chances of an editor noticing you’ve posted a story are a lot greater. Once you are approved, you can post other stories without needing approval. If you are a forum user, sending a pm to ‘Battery” will work too.
It’s been quite a while since I was last here so I figure I should introduce myself first as usual – I’m Kayley, your friendly neighborhood admin!
So it’s come to my attention recently that there have been a lot of advertisement posts on this site lately. So that’s bad and stuff. Luckily you guys spoke up about the problem before it got too bad, and I’ve set up a temporary fix to the problem that I think you guys should know about.
This change does not affect anyone who is already signed up and posting.
Basically, what’s changed is the default settings of new users. Normally, new users were automatically put in the “author” category (that’s you) so that they could make new posts. After tonight, new users will be placed in a different category that allows them to save drafts, but not post things to the site before editor review. This way, we’ll be able to delete the spam without it bothering you all and clogging up the archive, and when a legitimate new user makes a post, we’ll be able to spot it easily and move them to the “author” group. This might be a little inconvenient, but I think it’s definitely better than having twenty-three pages of backlogged spam in the archives!!
Unfortunately bots who are already signed up will still be able to post, but hopefully we’ll be able to catch them before they become too annoying, this way.
If you have any questions about this you can ask in the comments – I think it’s acceptable to discuss the change there in this case – or PM me on the forum.
