The ‘Five Times’ Challenge

Well, it’s been long enough since we had an official challenge, and so…
The fanfiction archive staff is challenging any interested Fowl fan to write a fanfiction about the the five times something happened to any of the characters. It could be almost anything- for example, “The five times Mulch regretted stealing something”, or “The five times Foaly doubted his ingenuity”, or “The five times Holly almost gave up”… basically, the five times [insert character name here][insert something interesting that happened to them here].
The entries will be judged by MMK, Star Jinin, and Meova. The winner’s story will be moved into the ‘Editor’s Choice’ category, and featured in Fangathering’s newsletter, The Haven Herald. Also, the winner’s future comments on the archive will be outlined, the way editors’ comments are outlined (but in a different color).
How to enter:
1. Write a story (don’t forget this part, it’s very important).
2. Post it in the new ‘Challenge Submissions’ category on the archive. Be sure to put it into another category too (action, romance, etc.) so that it doesn’t disappear when the challenge is over.
3. Email your entry, or a link to your entry, to bibliophile17@gmail.com (my email address) to make sure the judges know its there.All submissions should be sent by December 7, 2008. The winner will be announced sometime shortly after that.
Challenge Rules:
1. All submissions must follow the archive rules. You should take note that this also means that spelling and grammar will be considered when we judge.
2. All entries must be one-shots, and therefore in their completed form when they’re submitted. You can not update them later.
3. There is a minimum of 500 words (although a good entry will almost definitely take more than that). There is no maximum word count, as long as it’s all submitted at once (see above).
4. No crossovers, sorry. This also means that you can’t insert yourself into the story. It has to take place in the normal AF universe- but you can create new characters within that world, of course.
Feel free to ask any questions in the comments (but stay on-topic, please!).
Most importantly, have fun! We’re all looking forward to reading your entries.

Oooooooh! i challenge! perhaps, if I find the time, I will enter it. So basically, we write the story, email it to you, the rest of you Editors judge it and throw it in ‘Editor’s Choice,’ eh? Hmmmmmmm. I dunno, maybe, if I get the idea, if I have time.
On a semi-related topic: ummmmmmm how is it that the beginning of this announcement is–ah never mind.

Artymon: I hope you do enter! And yeah, that’s a pretty good summary. Although you skipped a couple of things the winner also gets, and it’s not all of the editors who are judging.

Um… I have a question. It’s not rly about the five times challenge, but I think that there’s something wrong with the search engine. When I type a user’s name not all of his/her stories are there. It’s really strange because in place of the stories, unrelated stories are also there.

Looking forward to reading your entries, guys! I’m actually trying to write one just for fun (I can’t actually enter, of course).
Vera: I know what you’re talking about, it’s annoyed me a bunch of times. The search button does not search for authors; it just searches story title and description. However, if you find one story by that person, if you go to the story and click on the author’s name, it should take you to a page with all the author’s stories (and their profile). Hope that helps!

Well i would love to enter this competition - if the fanfiction section would let me log in!! My username’s Warpspyder and whenever i enter my password (obviously the one i was emailed) it says incorrect password!! AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAARRRRRRRGGGGGHHHHHHH!!!

I forgot to ask one thing - does the story we write have to actually retell at some point the five times the character did something in the real series, or can it just be about those events (for instance, characters refer to the events as the central theme)? Btw, Warpspider or Exhume at your own risk, I had that happen to me on another website. Is there anything worse?!

Exhume at your own risk: First of all, don’t stretch the page. Second… I’m not sure why you’re having trouble logging in, and I’m not sure there’s anything I can do about it. Are you still having trouble? I can try to see if there’s any problem with your user… anyway, you can still enter: just email your story in, and it will still count.
E.N.HA: No, it doesn’t have to be something from the real series at all, or even related to events in the real series. It just has to be about one of the AF characters.

As for your comments, calm down. Yes, some of them are being deleted. As a rule of thumb, if your comments area anything but a review of the story they’re posted under, you can expect them to be deleted.

Kierisa- usually, the comments above yours get deleted too. Actually, we recently sent an email to the people whose comments get deleted the most often… which does not include you. Anyway, this is getting off-topic. If you want to discuss this more, you can email me. Also, we’re writing an announcement about deleted comments, so you’ll have that to reference in a couple of days.
There’s no set amount of time in between contests… just when an editor has enough time to set one up, and we have a good idea, etc. This is our fourth challenge (I think) and we’ve been around for almost two years. So I guess about once every six months. Although if this is successful, we may start having them more often (of course, no entries yet, so it’s looking unlikely).

It’s a good question… but sorry, only one entry per person. If you have more than one good idea, though, you should still write the second one, just for fun.

Wow! Does the comments thing include artymon? Cause he’s always putting comments that are random, then he complains that they’re getting deleted. About the challenge, do we write it in chapters or just in one big scope?

There’s a separate announcement to discuss comment rules…
The other contests were (if I remember correctly): The Elseworlds Contest, for “What If?” stories, a contest for holiday themed fics, and I think we had one for Artemis’s birthday. I might be wrong- I wasn’t really involved in any of the others.
Riddle: It’s possible we’ll extend the deadline, but for now you should prodeed as if it’s due on the seventh. I mean, you’ve still got two weeks. There’s some time.
Helen: Read the rules- it all has to be submitted at once.
Kierisa: There’s no limit. Make it as long as you like.

Kierisa: More than five chapters are fine. Just as long as we can clearly tell what the “Five Times” are, I guess. And I’ll put your story into the category for you, if you’d like… just email me with the link so it’s officially an entry.
Helen: It’s in the rules that there’s no limit.
Actually, you should all make sure to read through the rules again… especially the “How to Submit” part. Just a reminder: stories are not technically entered unless you’ve put them in the “Challenge Entries” category and sent me an email.

Yes, I wanted to know if I could add an epilogue, to make the story even sadder. Am I allowed to??? I heard from people that I wasn’t allowed to edit my entry after I submitted it.
